How to Keep Hot Tub Water Crystal Clear

You’ll have a hard time relaxing in your hot tub if the water is dirty. Fresh and clean water is imperative when it comes to a good hot tub experience, so to help you make sure your hot tub is always ready to use, we’ve come up with a list of tips on how to keep hot tub water crystal clear. Follow these few simple steps and you’ll be enjoying your hot tub for years to come.

Cover It Up

You won’t be using your hot tub all the time. In fact, it’ll be sitting there unused far more than it will be full of people. There’s no reason to worry about that, it’s just how it is. But when your hot tub isn’t in use you should cover it up to keep out any falling debris. Plant material, dust and bird droppings can all wreak havoc on the chemical composition of your water and leave you with a cloudy, murky soup. A good fitting hot tub cover will keep out any contaminants while also working to prevent heat from escaping and water and chemicals from evaporating. A hot tub cover is a worthy investment for all these reasons.

Skim the Water

We’ve all seen the iconic depiction of a teenage boy walking around a swimming pool with a skimming net on a long pole scooping out bugs, twigs and other detritus. Just because a hot tub is a lot smaller than a full-sized swimming pool doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it the same type of care. A regular skimming of the water’s surface will make sure these uninvited guests don’t hang around long enough to disturb your water chemistry.

Clean Yourself

Many of the problems with water chemistry are caused by our own oils, cosmetics, and soaps that adhere to our skin. Washing these off before getting into the hot tub will allow your water to stay cleaner for longer. Taking a shower before soaking in the hot tub will help reduce the amount of surfactants that end up in the water.

Test the Water

Making sure your water chemistry is properly balanced plays a big role in keeping your hot tub a clean and refreshing place to spend some time. It will also ensure the various hot tub components last as long as they should. You’ll need to test your hot tub water a few times each week – more if you’re using it frequently.

Apply Chemicals as Needed

With a hot tub, there’s no way around it: you’ll need to apply chemicals to the water according to the results of the tests you perform. Fortunately, it’s not overly complicated. Simply follow the directions according to your water test results and add the recommended chemicals. Doing so will keep everything in balance and ensure you’re bathing in clear, clean and safe water.

Change the Water

You won’t have to change your hot tub water all the time. Unless you end up with larger water chemistry problems, a couple of times a year is all that’s really necessary. When doing so it’s also a good idea to give the hot tub a good scrub to remove any dirt stuck to the walls and footwell. When refilling your hot tub, it’s better to use filtered water than the water coming straight out of your tap.

Maintain Your Filters

Your water filters will need to be cleaned and/or replaced on a regular basis. They remove a lot of particulate matter from the water and will eventually get clogged. You’ll be able to clean them repeatedly for a year or two but keep an eye out for any holes or tears in the filter.
