Steps to Fill a Hot Tub

Many first-time hot tub owners might not be familiar with the best ways to fill their spa. It’s all about trial and error and finding the best solution for you. Many people find that filling their hot tubs with a garden hose is the most easy and effective way to do so. These are the steps that will ensure smooth transitions for all first-time buyers.

Keep In Mind:

Before you reach for the hose, make sure to turn off all power to your hot tub. You should be doing this at the circuit breaker, and this is a step in actively preventing electrocution or damage from possibly occurring.

What To Do Before You Fill:

It is important to finalize the location of your hot tub before you proceed with filling it with water. This mainly has to do with the fact that once your hot tub is filled and all the pieces are in place, it will surely be an unpleasant task to try and move it later. It is important to research where the best and most convenient location in your space is, and become informed about your local bylaws. This can include how far your hot tub should be positioned from your home, and taking into consideration any electrical or plumbing that should be addressed.

Once the pump is placed in your optimal location, it will be necessary to tighten the connections and take out the filter nearest the control panel. This fitting should allow water to flow directly through this area.

How To Fill It:

Your hot tub should now be at its final resting place, and all power has been turned off. So, what’s the next step?

Start by placing your hose in the skimmer. As it fills, be sure to watch the hose closely. While each hot tub is different, the average time to fill a hot tub is between 30 and 45 minutes. However, you don’t want the hot tub to go unattended for too long, so be sure to check in on it every so often.

Before filling, you will see a line on your hot tub that indicates the level at which you should fill your water. It’s important to ensure the water is at this level to prevent any damage to your pump and jets. If there is not enough water in your tub, then these important functions might not be able to run as they need to. Also, this indicated line takes into consideration how much your hot tub’s water will rise as people enter and exit. Therefore, you want to try and avoid filling it over this line so that your tub does not overflow.

After Filling You Tub:

If your hot tub comes with a priming cycle then once the water has been filled, you can proceed with this step. This cycle will check the sensors to make sure everything is working properly before power is brought back to every part of your tub. If your hot tub has a two-pump system, then your next step will be to go ahead and turn the jets on.

It is important to use all of your senses to make sure things run as expected. Before you go about your day, you want to be able to hear everything running properly and see that the jets are moving. Next, check to ensure there are no air pockets within your filters. Turn them upside down, then reinstall them.

Although it may seem simple to fill a hot tub with water, there are important steps you need to take to ensure the safety of not only the tub, but everyone around.
